Stiefel<\/b><i><br \/>Objective:<\/i> To summarize the literature on alexithymia in cancer patients. <i>Methods:<\/i><br \/>\n The empirical literature published between 1972 and January 2010 was<br \/>\nsearched through MEDLINE, PSYINFO, EMBASE and the Cochrane Library. Key<br \/>\nwords were: alexithymia, affective symptoms, cancer, neoplasms. <i>Results:<\/i><br \/>\n The search identified 16 relevant studies which are methodologically<br \/>\nproblematic and show conflicting results. However, several interesting<br \/>\nhypotheses emerge such as a possible link between alexithymia and the<br \/>\nimmune system, between alexithymia and quality of life, or between<br \/>\nalexithymia, anxiety and depression. The question to what degree<br \/>\nalexithymia in cancer patients is a trait or a state cannot be answered<br \/>\nby these studies. <i>Conclusions:<\/i> A lack of methodologically sound<br \/>\nstudies and the large variations of results among studies suggest that<br \/>\nthe role of alexithymia in patients with cancer deserves more systematic<br \/>\n research.
